From what I`ve read I`d be more concerned about the CC star around my corals than around the shrimp.I don`t think they`re reef safe

CC stars are not reef safe. Look into getting a brittle/serpent star. Great scavengers and is reef safe. I would recommend staying away from the green hairy ones or I refer to them as green terrors if you have small fish

Indeed, or even not so small fish as they can get close to a foot across! The species is Ophiarachna incrassata. I would prefer serpents myself, as there are too many stories of other species of brittles out there that have gone on the feed, too.

Also, when you're looking for scavengers, you really need to be careful of a few things, not the least of which is to ensure that they're really detritivores. If you have a relatively finely grained gravel/sand bed, then Archaster typicus might be a good choice. Unless you have a very large system I would start with only one.

Skip the Chocolate and get one of these. I have had one for over a year now and it is on the move cleaning constantly. Almost never hides. Feeds during the day and night.

is that a red knobby sea star or a red general? Protoreaster nodosus is technically not reef safe and is advised not to have them..I have however have been lucky, ive had mine over a year now without a hitch, it is my oldest tank resident and is a model citizen. Unfortunately petstore owners try to pawn these guys off as algae eaters (which they will eat along with other things including corals and possibly sleeping fish) for really cheap prices...no really thinks starfish are destructive or really even predatory but they are...Id really recommend not getting one.

You may be right....I don't keep corals. This animal is a super janitor.

i had a cc star. i would advise against it. he was a terror to small sleeping fish. he also attacked my other orange star. i'm not really sure of the tech name of that star.
