I have a 20L and would like some opinions. My tank is well establised almost 3 years now and over this three year period I have had my powerhead on and off. My question is this, Do I need it in a smaller 20L or can I get along with just my hang on filter???

You want your tank water to turn over 10-15X an hour. If your powerfilter does not provide that much flow you need to suplement. If it were me I would have a small powerhead regardless.

3 or 4 minijet 606 i.e. 1 in each corner. Definitely use something - so you have good flow in the tank

If you feel like you have dead spots definately add one or more. Besides, why not add a little cheap insurance? If your power filter dies, at least you have some water movement. Filters and pumps never die when you're home. Back-up can be the difference between a minor inconvienience and total loss of your system.
