They sure do. But when a system ends up complicated out of necessity, as many of ours do, I think that's a different matter altogether.
In the case of my sump, it's not really all that divided, simply three baffles to ensure that bubbles aren't returned to the tank, low flow enables proper mechanical filtration and plenum doesn't get blown away...
