Yes, get a check valve and run a loss of electricity test to make sure it functions correctly. Stay away from check valves in the PVC section at Lowes, most you will find have a fairly heavy, in-line spring intended for higher pressure than we run for return. Try and find a clear flapper style, ( got mine at LFS) and try to make it a little larger than the plumbing in use (ex. using 3/4 -1"...get a 1" to 1 1/2" valve) to ensure good flow and reduced back presure on the return pump. You can also see if it's getting clogged w/junk so you can replace before you need it and it fails. Isn't plumbing fun?
