Howdy folks, I have been lurking here a couple months taking in all I have missed since leaving the hobby 15 years ago, and would like some opinions on a closed loop arrangement I am thinking of doing.

I have a 30 gallon, with a remora/maxi-jet 1200/overflow box as the only filtration, with carbon occasionally. I also have a maxi-jet 1200 in the corner of the tank spraying to the front middle that I am not happy with.

I saw the closed loop at melevsreef using a mag7 http://www.sparklingfloorservice.com/ta ... dloop.html

the question I have is whether a mag7 would be too much flow for a 30 gallon along with using the SCWD Wavemaker with the above arrangement?

mag7 rated @ 700gph, I will have about a 3' head, which will give me about 500gph

thanks

ps. I would also like to say how nice it is to get info on reef tanks with the internet compared to 15 years ago... :D

Welcome to RDO, Paradoxed!

a Mag7 is not an overkill for a 30 gal if you don't concentrate all the flow onto the sandbed or a coral. If you distribute it out nicely, it is fine. If you are concerned, use larger output to slow down the water velocity, and/or redirect the flow to somewhere safe.

I think a lot of folks would say you can never have too much flow..

For what its worth, I'm running on a Mag5 in a 30 as well and seriously considering the same move to a Mag7.

Thanks for refreshing my view on melevs site too!

In a closed loop, you negate the head issue so theoretically the pump should be at 0' of head no matter where it is located in the closed loop setup. Just friction and loss from angles slow down the flow.
