Hey everyone. After researching for nearly a year now, I finally ordered my 180 AGA w/the mega flow kits yesterday. I plan to keep mostly sps and clams, and most likely a Euphyllia of some sort. I wanted to run my list of equipment and see what you all thought.

Lighting: 3x250w DE (10K or 13K) with VHO or T5 actinic support.

Sump: 45gal breeder

Return: Blueline 100PX (40RLXT)
Question here... is the 40rlxt sufficient flow through the sump or should I go up to the 70rlt? I was thinking the 40 for cost and noise, but those are less important than overall health of the system. Also, I decided to go with the Blueline instead of the Iwaki for the supposed noise savings and very similar design. They have a good warranty so I hope I won't regret it down the road.

Water movement: Two Tunze Stream 6100s w/multicontroller

Skimmer: EuroReef CS8-3

Calcium Reactor: My Reef Creations CR-2 or CR-4
Haven't decided if I need the extra capacity for a few extra bucks.

Controller: AquaController II
Will control lighting, pH, and temp (will use the direct connect for lights rather than X10 modules).

Dosing Pump: Tunze 3155

Heaters: 2x ProHeat Titanium 350W

Cooling: Depends on my lighting... If enclosed hood then two 5" Orion fans. If not enclosed then I'll see how it goes. If I need a chiller later, I'll add one.

LR: 150lbs Marshall Island and Fiji

SB: 2-3" sandbed

RO/DI: AirWaterIce Typhoon II

Phwew, I'm sure I left something out. Thoughts, comments, ideas... I'm open to all of them. Remember, I'm a newb to saltwater and I'd rather get it right now rather than later. Thanks in advance for any help.

Looks like you've done your homework - that's a great list of equipment. You might look at Sequence and Gorman-Rupp for a high output return pump as well. Check out our Pump Selection Guide in the library if you haven't already.

Are you going to use the dosing pump to dose kalk top-off? IMO it's a good idea, especially in a large SPS tank. Kalkwasser + Ca reactor together works really well. You'll have your hands full keeping up with Ca/Alk demands once that tank starts growing-in.:)

Chris, thanks for the reply. Yeah, eventually I will probably dose kalk. For now, I figure the calcium reactor should keep up at least until I get a decent coral load. I don't think I'm going to go with the garden look with as many corals as will fit. I prefer the more natural look where fewer bigger corals dominate, but I may change my mind once I see all the empty space :)

Where is a good place to get a Sequence pump? I was planning on using either one of those or an AmpMaster 3000 on a closed loop, but decided to go with the Streams for space of plumbing, ease of setup, and energy efficiency. Also, which Sequence (or Gorman-Rupp (do they make airplane engines or something?)) do you think would be appropriate with the Streams?

That's a sweet list of goodies for sure, you get an 'A' for doing your home work.
My .02 cents would be get the bigger Calcium Reactor for a few extra bucks.
I have the Airwaterice RO/DI works great. You might want to think of getting the one that supplies RO water for your house if that work for you, I did and I'm very happy.
My tank has ran much better with a chiller, they are spendy but worth it in my opinion. My house however gets very warm in the summer with no air conditioning.

Are you building your stand, wood or metal?

Good luck

Dave

Hehe, Simon thanks for the reminder. I've never been one to jump in the shallow end of things. :D

vair, thanks for the advice. I'll consider the drinking water for the ro/di. On the chiller I was hoping my AC would eliminate the need, but I think I'll have to learn that one the hard way

Forgot to add... I'm working on building a stand out of wood (hopefully have it done before the tank arrives so I only have to lift it once.) I'm pretty much basing it on Joe Burger's stand (http://www.cnidarianreef.com/capstand.cfm). I'll definitlely try to take pics when putting it all together and post 'em in the DIY forum.

Alex,

I don't regularly buy from anyone who stocks the Sequence pumps so I can't really suggest anyone in particular. You might try doing a search here on the board or Google it. I try to buy as much as I can from the sponsors of our board. BTW, I know Marine Depot carries the Gorman-Rupp pumps and they are a sponsor.

As for the flow rates of different pump models, have you seen the Pump Selection Guide in our library? There's also a spreadsheet located there that you can download to help you calculate system performance with head/friction losses all factored-in.
