I have both Fiji and some Florida live rock. Fiji is more porous and usually cheaper depending on where you live, but it does have farther to travel so there can be more die off. Overall I like Fiji IMO it is a good choice.

I am starting off with approximately 10lbs of Fiji LR in my 29gal. Then a week later I will add some more. I will continue this process until I am happy with the amount of LR in my tank. I read on this forum that buying in small amounts reduces the die off on the LR. I think there area few sites that ship you half your order right away and then the other half of your LR order when you let them know the parameters have leveled off.

Fiji rock is one of the most popular and is a good choice. There are some other light, porous types of Pacific rock available as well that would also make an excellent choice.

It's really not necessary to add the LR in small amounts. My recommendation is to just order and place whatever amount of rock you ultimately want in the tank all at once.

The shipping is expensive and for airfreight you general pay in large weight increments - in other words shipping on 20 pounds of rock may not cost you anymore than shipping on 50 pounds of rock. Last time I mail ordered live rock (a couple of years ago) it was the same price up to 100 pounds.

I also like figi, I have a mix of 75% figi and 25% tonga. I purchased it online at marinedepot.com. I got the show size figi and was very impressed.

well gentlemen, i thank you for your replys. i currently have a 55 gallon with about 60 lbs. live rock i purchased at my lfs, with various corals and inverts. i bought a 30 gallon acrylic, which i plan to incorporate into a loop system, kinda like a fuge, but side by side. water from the 55 goes to the 30 via pump and gravity feeds back to the 55. i will use play sand in the 30 seeded with live sand from my 55. when i get the 30 full and turn on the pump coming from the 55, it will be just like doing a sizeable water change, except there will be new sand and live rock. i assume after testing closely, i will be able to determine if there is any ammonia at all, and do water changes accordingly. only thing is, if there is too big of an ammonia spike, i risk losing what i have in the 55. so it may be a little tricky at the start. if you look at my post "check this out" in this forum and general reef keeping discussion, you can see a graphic of what i plan to do. this being said, i planned to add live rock to the 30 slowly, unless someone more experienced than i says dont worry, just add what you want. so if anyone has any input on this send it my way. chow for now. :)
