California Legal Macro Algae

I still have a fish only tank without live rock (though I think the dead rock may be picking up life from the live sand), and I would like to add some Macro Algae to the tank since it is unlikely to show up on its own. The problem is I live too near the peoples republic of Berkly and the Soviet Socialist Republic of Davis, so several popular species of Caulerpa have become illeagal. The only LFS that I like is in a quandry becuase thier wholesalers have comopletely stopped selling Macros at all. Where do I go to order California Legal Macro Algae that is hardy enough to live in a fish only environment. (I am fastideous with care)

Chaetomorpha and Gracilaria come to mind.. and I think one reefnutz is up your way, might be having some extra in the near future.

The issue with Caulerpa has nothing to do with where you are in California, heck, it was (IIRC) outside Batuiguitos Lagoon down San D. way where C. taxifolia had been found. It's just the fact that you're IN California. My beau, up in Lake Tahoe, can't get it either (well... probably in Nevada he can), as if Caulerpa's going to overtake Lake Tahoe, yeah?

I read, and read, and read the whole long trail of legislation and news in the past few days, and the whole thing seems to have been a bit of over-reaction to begin with. From what I gathered, the Caulerpa that appeared in those harbors were more than likely brought back to the states on military and trade vessels, not wholesalers or hobbiests, and they seem to have taken over realatively barren muddy bottoms anyway. whatever they are illeagal

Well, look to macros that require a rocky surface to adhere their holdfasts to. I can't give you a complete list, but I'm sure that if you go to Mary Middlebrook's site, she'd list what she can carry here in Cali.

This it the first I have hear of her. I just got my first taste of salt a little while ago, so I am still floundering (punn intended) a bit to find what I need. Where is her URL?

Her username here is MaryHM. See here: http://www.seacrop.com/ I've seen her facilities, and she had expansion plans in the process of execution when I was out there. It's a top notch operation, in my opinion.

Check out Inland Aquatics, and do a general Google on macros, Chaeto, and Gracilaria... shoot, can't remember the other macros I believe we can purchase in this state.

How about "Halimeda" (or is it "Halymeda") as a macro? I'm pretty sure it's still legal in California, and your tangs and other herbivores are less likely to munch on it because it's calcareous (calcaereous? calceareous? somebody help me spell!)

Halimeda, and I don't see why it wouldn't be legal here in Cali.. Oh, yes, "calcareous". :)

That's awesome, I was just looking at their site as it was a sponsor on bostonreefers.org. I will be only about 5 minutes away from that shop so it's really cool I'll be able to stay in the hobby (was unsure if I was going to be able to find an LFS out there). Now the hard part, moving my 75G and 35G across the country :?

...on the plus side, looks like I'll be at MACNA this year! :D
