HI,
I am planning on setting up a 75 gallon reef and was looking for a little help. I was planning on using my 29 galon tank that is currently running and using it as a refugium. I am looking for suggestions on whether or not i would need to setup a sump also or if i could do both in the 29 gallon tank or what I should really do.
Thanks,
Scott

Hey Scott,

A seperate sump isn't necessary but it may be useful. It really depends on your needs/wants. If you are looking to use a good in-sump skimmer, you may want to add the second tank for a sump. If you are not planning on using a skimmer or using a hang-on skimmer, then a sump really isn't necessary. (FWIW, I recommend using a skimmer) In my opinion, a 29 gallon is too small to divide into both a refugium and sump.

i currently have a bak pak hang on and was planning on continuing to use this in the refugium and possibly considering adding another bak pak so that it could keep up with a 75 gallon tank. what i was then wondering is whether that would be enough filtering with a refugium for a 75 gallon reef.

If you can fit something else under there for a sump that is what I would do. When I started my 75 I knew nothing and now that I have a reef setup and running I am limited to what I can add under the stand with out taking the tank off of it. If you do not have the flexability to add a bigger sump/fuge once the tank is up and running I would do it now! I wish I did!!!
