I have a question about my 1st coral. It is a rock covered with mushroom corals that weren't looking so good at the store. I bought some tests for phosphate and calcium (calcium is a bit low for hard corals from what I have read). went back and traded in my 4 stripe discilus for a yellow clown blenny. I drip acclimated both the coral and the fish in different containers then added them to the tank. Over-night the coral seems to be doing much better, and seems to be feedint on Kent Marine Micro-Vert. The problem is that the Goby insists in perching on the corals, ALL of them in turn. will this kill the coral, or am I concerned about nothing?

Thank you

no it wont kill them initially...If it is a consistent problem, it could cause detremental effect..At this point in time, i wouldnt be too concerned

Thanks, I appreciate the quick answer. The Gobi Perches everywhere, but seems to really like the coral. The Mushrooms are already looking better than they did in the store in any event (except a couple that were badly damaged when the clerk knocked a rock on them. looks like squigly guts coming out of them)

Ok the mushrooms have been in the tank for a while. and here is what I have observed. At night the edges will curl up and seem to have a "Frosty" look to them, and during the day, when I have the lights on, they lay flat and spread out. Also, when the lights first come on, they seem to be green, but turn brown within an hour or so of lights on.

I assume, since the mushrooms have doubled in size, and what looks like a new one is growing on another rock, that they are healthy. I just want to be sure. Any comments would be appreciated

regards

:EDIT: Lighting 50/50 antcinc/10,000k 20W mini-compacts by coralife (2 of them) in a rectangular 10g. If these make it and I can continue to maintain good water paramaters, I would like this to be a softie nano

Sounds like normal 'shroom behavior to me. If you notice, once the mushrooms have acclimated and gotten used to your goby bouncing on them, they will take off nicely. Most common mushrooms will expand size 6-7 times during the day compared to night. Sounds like you're okay so far. :D

Thanks. The corals don't seem to mind the gobi. Honestly, if I had to choose now, there is no way I would part with my gobi. He is like a dog, he will only come to the glass for me, and likes to hang out at watch me when I am in the room (I know he just wants food, but only reacts to my presense).

What would be some advice for moving on from here with the nanno?

Tank Age, good next-step corals, paramaters I should check for softies (currently still only check ph, amonia, nitrates, nitrites)

I have planned to let the tank age for at least another 2 months before adding another coral to the system.

Current inhabitants are as follows
7 (I think) nassarius snails (do they breed in tank???)
2-3 Turbo snails
4 hermits (one murderer has been removed)
1 Gobiodon okinawae
1 Chrysiptera Parasema
1 Lysmata wurdemanni
Several (10-15) not-so-colorful mushrooms (dunno species exactly)

I generally do not include the cleanup critters when I figure bio-load. the water is clear and tests good. Diatomes have moved from the glass to the sandbed (trying a shorter photo-period to try to keep them down) I use salt water from the LFS "Gas Station" which I let age/evap with an airstone for circulation and to ensure that it has a good store of disolved gasses. the SPG from LFS water has to be raised from 1.021 to 1.023 to go in my tank

Thanks for any advice

You can ignore the above post, I have posted this question in the Nano forum.
