Supporting Rock Structure

Quick poll. Who places their live/base rock on some type of support vs. directly on the tank bottom or sandbed?

Reason I ask, is I would like to support my rock above the sandbed to allow for more exposed surface area. Thinking maybe supporting the entire structure on a dozen or so PVC "legs" then maybe building a frame of sorts.

Looking for opinions, ideas from those who have already set up their tanks.

I put mine over 3/4 inch and 1" PVC in my 110 gal tank. It is done by many people, and the there is no consent as to the advantage/disadvantage.

IME, it is fine thing to do if you want less rock. The PVC is starting to be covered by coralline right now, after several months.

Cool. I thought I'd read that leaving more of your sandbed exposed would give better filtering capabilities. Maybe it was just for plenum systems. Can't remember now.

Mine is resting on the sand. I recall Louey supporting his with acrylic rods.

My live rock sits on three 4" pieces of pvc pipe with a round 24"x24" landscape walkway pad.I use that as a base,this leaves me a full under shelf that has 2 powerheads runnin through it for great circulation.On top of the pad I have 100lb's of assorted live rock stacked with crevices and caves.It is very stable(never a rock/reef slide) and it is about 30" in height which gives a great look! Thats what works for me,prior to building my "BASE" i had alot of falling and unstability and wobbling rocks.PROBLEM SOLVED WITH BEAUTY! I hope this helps.....
