I see pics of them on the net and in books. Would I be able to see them in the tank or refugium if they where there? Or, are they too small to see with the naked eye?

There is tons of information out there concerning copepods. most are small enough that you may not notice them (less than 1mm). Here is an easy-to-read page on them
Usually all you'll see during the day is a shell floating around in the water column.. - And your fish will probably constantly nip at it and blow it back out..
If you want to see them your best bet is at night with a red lens over a flashlight scanning the bottom or in/around macro algaes..
If your tank is rampant with them you also can see them swarming all over the place even when the main lights are on..
