Just wondering if anyone knew of any good models of RO DI units and also if the DI unit is nescessary or if just the RO is needed.

Kent genereally makes good RO units. POly-Bio-Marine's Kold-Stereil unit is great but quite expensive. The main things you should be concerned about when buying an RO unit is amount of waste, life of cartridge, GPD, and bang-for-buck. :D

I have been very happy with my spectrapure RO/DI35 (same cartiriges as any other this size).

RO does most of the work, but wastes a lot of water (4:1) and is very slow, and can leave traces of things in the water, will generally give you a TDS of around 5-20 depending on the source water, which is why it is often followed by DI.

DI will work great along, and make a lot more water a lot faster without the waste, but the trade off is the need to change your DI cartrige possible after making only 30 gallons of water if your tap water is very bad.

RO is a membrane that water is forced through, only the purest of H2O will get through the membrane. DI on the other hand is an exchange resin type filter I belive.

I personally like the Spectrapure units and their customer service is excellent.

This would possibly be true if you were not using an RODI and just using a DI such as those tapwater filters by Aquarium Systems you can get for like 30 dollars for example
