Dan,
A refugium is a contained area, seperated from the main tank that is used for growing out frags, marco algea, and pods.

There are three different types of refugium, HOT, inside the tank and under the tank around the sump but seperated from. The refugium contains in most cases, a sand bed or mud bottom, macro algea, live rock and a light.

People that do fragging, will place the newly created frag into the refugium for grow out. It's a safe haven away from all preditors. I use mine as a pod production unit for my main tank.

Dan, a refugium is not a quarantine tank in the sense it is plumbed into the main system and shares the same water. People use the 'fuge for a lot of reasons including increasing the total water in the system, the more water you have the more stable your tank will be, or to have a place for macro algae etc.

A quarantine tank should be totally separate from the main system in order to keep any new fish from bringing disease into the main system. I even have special "Q tank" tools that I only use on that tank to keeping contamination to a minimum.

Good luck!

Thanks for clearing that up Lawdawg. I never would have thought to mention that a refugium isn't a qt! Oh well.
