I'm pretty new at this and am looking at buying some live rock in the next week or so. Right now I'm looking at ordering 50 lbs and have a few questions.

I've heard from several people that Fiji rock is the best. Is this true? Also I have seen that Walt Smith fiji rock is selling really cheap, around $3.10 a pound. Is this good rock or should I stay away from it?

What about Haitian rock? It is also not very expensive.

thanks

Fiji rock is a good choice IMO. Any light, porous rock (which generally means something from the Pacific) is my preference. Marshall is another great choice, although a bit more expensive.

The Walt Smith rock is generally good, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.

I have no experience with Haitian rock so I can't offer anything there...

I bought Walt Smith rock when I set my 75 up. I was very pleased with the two boxes I got.

Harboraquatics.com supposedly has some of the best rock around, or so allot of folks say.

And....Welcome to Reefs.org! :D

I don't know if Haitian rock is any good or not. Never seen any.

Go with the Fiji like ChrisRD said, and for that price, you will not be disappointed.

I think that Fiji is the best based on it poresness (lots of holes) and the colors (coraline algae).

LiveAquaria is selling a 45lb box for $99. I ordered some last week and I am very pleased. Shipping depends on where you live. It cost me about $67 to ship from CA to VA FedEx Next Day. $3.6 per lb delivered is pretty good for around here. And the rock is very nice. Great variety of sizes and a lot of color. Not very cured, but that goes without saying.

Dear Friends,

The amazing journey I have taken with this family of hobbyists, researchers, and simply curious individuals has meant so much to me over the past eight years. It has created friendships and memories that I will always cherish. It is with a mixture of sadness and excitement, then, that I share with you my decision to now pursue other dreams and spend more time with my family and friends. As of June 7th, 2004, Harbor Aquatics will close its doors forever.

This decision has not been an easy one. Harbor has been an amazing blessing to me and has allowed me to meet many wonderful people over the years. So, from the deepest part of my heart, I thank you all for being a part of this journey. Thank you for making Harbor a symbol of excellence, and thank you for helping me through the tough times -- and sharing with me all the joyful ones.

Keep on reefing,

Hati rock I got locally was large flat pieces of broken off coral with little coraline on it. The best rock I got was from Tampa Bay Saltwater, I have a small brain coral growing on a piece and lots of sponges and plants. There is no cure time since it comes from the ocean to your door, I had lots of cukes and crabs too. Nice guy, called me on the phone in response to my E-mail. He will ship to a airport cheaper than I can drive over there. Good luck.
