I remember reading somewhere that the sg for acclamation tank should be lower than normal to encourage parasites to drop off. Does anyone practice this for new fish and how long do you normally Quarantine befor intro into main tank?

Thanks - Rick

Hey Rick

If you do a search for hyposalinity treatment you should come-up with a lot of information as it's been discussed quite a bit in the past.

If the fish you purchased is coming from an LFS, IMO the easiest thing to do would be to have the Q-tank at a similar SG to start. Acclimate the fish to the tank over an hour period. Then, if you're going to use hypo treatment, lower the salinity gradually from there (should get plenty of feedback on the procedure from the search).

A quaratine period probably isn't very useful if you're not going to hold the fish in the Q-tank for at least a month. 4-6 weeks seems to be the standard practice (assuming there are no problems/diseases that appear during that time in which case you start the "clock" from when things are back to normal).

One more tip, keep a 'special' set of nets, buckets, etc for use only on the QT tank.

Trust me, if something breaks out in the QT tank, you don't want to spread it to your main tank by using the same piece of hose for water changes for both tanks. Been there and done that .

Me too. What's Caulpera, though? <sm, quickly searching for that genus>
