I am in the process of setting up my 90 gallon into a reef aquarium. I will have 440 watts of power compacts on it. Is this enough for LPS and SPS? Maybe if I put them closer to the surface? Also whats everyones favorite additives, what is essential?

Thanks,

Lane

By 440 watts of PC, I'm assuming 8 X 55 watters? IMO you'll be fine to keep most stuff under that lighting - just keep the more light demanding stuff higher in the tank.

If you haven't purchased the lighting yet you might consider going with 4 X 96 watters as you'll get more intensity and save on electric and lamp replacement costs down-the-road. Personally, I prefer halides, but if I were going to use a fluorescent lighting system again, I would probaby use VHO or T-5.

As for additives, my advice is to just supplement Ca/Alk, water changes and feed the fish.

Welcome to reefs.org!

440 is plenty for LPS and SPS if kept middle to high in the tank. Some LPS do not reqire that much light. SPS may exibit poor coloration and slow growth, or they may not. Do research before buying corals.

Favorite additives: Most say none except calcium, or only add what you test for (ie only add iodine if you test for iodine levels).
Water changes should keep all but the calcium levels high enough.
For calcium the 2 part liquids work well, but for 90g a Kalk drip would be more economical.

Good Luck! Keep an eye on reefs.org and keep asking questions...
