I have a PC that is on at night (reverse photoperiod) over my sump to grow my chaeto thats in there. I'm wondering what the heck this stuff is? Is it bad? Should it be there?

Do you have a clearer pic? It's tough to say what's going-on in that picture. The greenish stuff looks like the start of some slime or turf algae. Maybe even dinos if it's snotty looking with bubbles in it.

Anyone? It's all over the bottom, and on the walls.
I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the chaeto in the sump, but I woudn't think so? Could it just be some kind of algae from the light thats on all night over the sump growing the chaeto?

I think the same stuff grows on the walls in the tank, but I've just been using the magnet to get it off easily. It's not on the rock from what I can see (knock on wood). Do I need some kind of cleanup crew in the sump because the light is on in there?

Thanks for any input!

OK, here are some more shots of the stuff....

You could make the pictures a little bit smaller. :)
You have all kinds of stuff growing in there. Sponges, hair algae, diatoms; nothing I'd call bad though.

Yeah, I think its probably the diatoms (brown stuff) you're worried about right Jon?

Normal to some degree.. - Might want to check the TDS of your RO/DI water though.. - Make sure its working properly.

TDS is 1ppm.

These don't really look like diatoms though. At least not the ones I'm used to that are more on the deep brown side.

Out of curiousity, where the heck do you see the hair algae and sponges?

That green haze in the background of one of the pics is the clump of chaeto in my sump.

So do most of you have that in your fuge/sump?

Like I said, I'm not sure if we're supposed to have any kind of cleanup critters in a sump/fuge because theres light over it. I didn't get them, because I just figured the added algae is even more of a nutrient sponge.

Since I downgraded the mini to a couple nanos I don't have a sump but yeah, I had something fairly similiar I think.. - Didn't really think about it too much though.

Curious what more experienced voices have to say...

It is just the regular gooey stuff that grows in sumps. Nothing to really worry about.
