Will anemones generally sting you?

If they do, is the sting comparable to a jellyfish? I collected three Aurelia stings while in Cuba, and while they were damn annoying, I managed to survive them.

Some people react badly to anemone stings but it is very rare. Of the most commonly kept species, the carpet anemones seem to have the most potent sting, though again, to most people it just feels sticky and causes no pain. If my carpet stings me on the back of my hand, it can itch for a couple of hours,,, that's about as bad as you're likely to get.

To my knowledge, only one fatality has been attributed to an Anemone sting (a condylactis sp.) I wouldn't worry about it,,, but don't go sticking your hand into an anemone to prove me wrong.

What Juck said :) Unless you're allergic or have some immune deficiency (in which case you really shouldn't be playing with reef life anyhow), anemones are pretty harmless to people. Just don't lick it :P

MMmmmmmmm, licking anemone. Kinda like pop-rocks with a kick! :) (Children: do not attempt at home!)

I was stung once, felt like being bitten by a fire ant. Nothing excruciating, but nothing that peeing on my hand didn't solve! NB: peeing on your hand works, it really does. :D

I used to pick them up to move them to another part of the tank. It dousn't hurt unless they get you on the under arm, then you get a little sting that will leave light red marks. But that's just my experience
