my reefs been up for over 2 yrs, recently i have found the water color was a green tint to it. and the top of the water has a rust color film on it. The rocks i have noticed have a green alge around them as well as the glass. it could be hair alge cause it looks fuzzy, any tips on how to get rid of this.?

Are you using a skimmer? The oil slick type thing on the water surface should be taken care of by your skimmer and powerheads aimed towards the surface of the water.
What type of cleanup crew do you have? A variety of snails should solve the algae on the glass problem.

My best advice is to look at any recent changes, especially if the buildup happened very suddenly. An overflow is the best way I know of to get rid of the surface film, the skimmer should pull it out for removal. You should have the powerheads pointed towards the surface anyway, to boost O2/CO2 exchange at the surface.

A few other things to consider: if using tap water, is it possible your water district may have made some changes?
Has the sun changed position enough to expose the tank to brighter light, or lengthened the time it gets bright light?
Have you experienced any die-offs?
Do your bulbs need changing, perhaps?
New food or feeding regimen?

only added an auto fish feeder while on vacation. I use a ro/di water system. Humm...lighting was changed 2 mths ago. Other then that everything is fine. I did a good water change and cleaned off as much of it as i could. We will see if it helps.

If you have been running for two years without algae problem and and just now experienceing an algae problem, then I suspect you need to cut down on lighting or feeding until the water clears.

Otherwise you need to expand plant life you desire like the macros in your refugium.
