Good morning reefers.:)

My ALS Berlin sump arrived yesterday with no holes in the sides, I guess they let you drill the holes where you want.....Makes sense.....4 questions....

1) How far off the floor should I drill for my skimmers input and output?
2) How far off the floor for the main return?
3) Since I can only return my refugium water into the last section of the sump before the main return....Are bubbles going to be a factor if I let the refuge water pour in?....
4) Any recommendations on what drill bit I should use?....Or Dremmel attachment?

Thanks.

1, if skimmer is in-sump, no hole is needed. Otherwise, it is low enough to be cover with water at all time, but high enough so that you can at least put a bulkhead on it.

2, see 1, above

3, you can use buffles or plastic mesh to slow down the water so that little bubble is created. there are many other tricks.

4, never use dremmel for this. Get a hole-saw attachment for your regular drill.

1) What type of skimmer? Most I know can be run in or above the sump and I really wouldn't drill holes for skimmers.
2) If you're using an inline pump, you'll have to measure the height after you buy the pump. They differ from model to model. Submersible pumps, of course, don't need any holes drilled.
3) You can definitely baffle the water to stop the bubbles from going back into the pump. You might even have luck just plumbing the refugium's water outlet blow the water line of the sump (no bubbles from splashing).
4) I'm not a tool guy myself, but my Milwaukee round bit works terrific! (I think this is it)

As for the return pump, if you use flexible tubing, the location of the hole is not all that important. Just make it close enough so that the tube doesn't get kinked.

Thanks for all your help....

Len....I have an ETSS 800....The outlet in 1.5".....I was going to put in a 1.5" bulkhead above the water line and connect with flexible hose (inline) to the skimmer output...That makes everything attached to my sump removable....What do you think??
