Hello

I am new to saltwater tanks and have a few questions. first I am setting up a 50 gal reef tank. my first question is how should I arrange the rock? i want it to be as natural as possible. also what should I do for water movement? what is the best cheap skimmer? I have tons of questions so thanks in advance for any help.

For aquascaping ideas, you can look at pics of other peoples' tanks here and on other sites. Some things to keep in mind are stability (avalanches in the tanks are no fun) and good places to set corals (if that is what you have in mind). Also many fish appreciate some good places to hide and swim through.

Just throw the rock in and move it around :D untill it looks right that is. That's how I always do it. Avoid RIO pumps for water movement; go for Magdrives. I've heard great things about AqauC Remora skimmers :D

Yep, the best way to aquascape and placing pumps is to look at other people's tank. Or go to your local public aquarium to get some ideas. It's a matter of taste. Some prefer piling up, some likes arches and bridges, and I like small hill in the center with wide open spaces all around.

Maxijets, magdrives, anything but a RIO basically! RIOS have a habit of dying and taking things with them. Aquascaping is a matter of preference. For skimmers, I would go with an AquaC. :D

I struggled with this when I broke into reef keeping myself.. the best cheap skimmer isn't a cheap skimmer OR the cheapest skimmers aren't the best, if that makes sense. The cheapest ones you'll run across, besides air stone driven ones, will be the seaclones, and the prisms.....HOwevER as has been stated here the Aqua C Remora is probably the best for the price... although it will run you abou 50-75 $$ more than the others.

If your're going to skimp on somthing dont do it on a skimmer or lighting. You can always cut costs by not adding so much live rock, or not adding expensive inhabitants for a while (as you shouldn't anyway).

Just my 2 cents
B.
