Can anyone recommend a reliable digital thermometer?

I got home today and my digital CoralLife thermometer was reading 87.9 degrees. I freaked out, thinking my tank was getting ultra hot. So I grabbed an "analog" mercury based thermometer and threw it in the tank. After waiting an hour or so, the mercury thermometer was reading 80 degrees, while the digital thermo was continually rising in temp, from 87.9 to 88.2, then down again, then back up again. The analog thermo remained at 80 the entire time.

I'm not sure what to trust now, digital or analog?

Can anyone give me some recommendations? Thanx

I have a couple of digitals and haven't had any problems yet (it's been a few years). Sounds like you just got a defective one.

I double check mine against each other and/or against a glass one perdiodically to make sure all is well.

Cheapo digital corallife thermometer used in the hobby is well know for its inaccuracy. Most give you a number down to a tenth of a degree, but in fact, the accuracy is a few degree. Besides the simple electronic, the temperature probe is low-grade, and combine both together, you get what you pay for, even with 100% markup.

Analog thermometer typically is more accurate, but not those that you get from your local gardening shop. Laboratory-grade certified thermometer cost about $50 and up, but you don't really need this for your tank. Just use the thermometer as a rule of thumb, and don't get freak out when you see it malfunction...

If anyone finds a really accurate thermometer, please post about it. I been looking for one for years. The ones I have used will allow you to get it close, but it would be nice to have one that was spot on.

I would recommend the Pinpoint digital wireless thermometer. They run about 35 dollars and come with one remote sensor. You can then add up to 3 more sensors to other tanks and monitor up to 4 tanks with one unit. If runs very close to my glass unit.
