I bought a 75 Gallon with a homemade stand that had been in use for several years for Gourmais (freshwater with lots of rock). My question has to do with the stability of the stand.

First off, it is more like a cabinet with a flat top and open front that is several inches bigger than the tank on each side. The stand has a back (with access hole) and sides and the tank just sits on it.

Second, the stand has no middle support. It is very solidly built and with 2X4 frame and cross bracing and it does come in about 8" on each side in the front. I guess my question is does this sound solid enough... We are planning to add doors to the bottom and we could add a middle brace then, but it would be sooo much easier to work underneath if I didn't need the cross brace.

Without seeing the actual stand it's tough to comment, but is sure sounds sturdy. If it's been holding the tank for years with no problems, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

Go to your local fish store and examine the way their stands are made. You can compare their stands construction to yours and decide what you think.
