No, you're trapped here forever!

Seriously though, I have a metal stand I've used since I was like 14.. - It finally has a few minor surface spots in areas that don't touch the structural metal, but otherwise (knock on wood) I've been pretty lucky..

Bang, I always paint my metal stands before I use them. I agree with Nikon that they aren't as pretty as wood but, when you have a few tanks they are a lot cheaper. I also varnish the inside and bottom of my wood stands.

I have a wrought (rot?) iron stand on my old 29 that scared me because it started to rust in some very baaaad places. One of the reasons why I moved the critters.

FWIW...

You can do a simple camoflage job on an iron stand by taking a cheap rectangular fabric tablecloth, some fabric glue and the industrial strength velcro the craft store sells.

Cut the table cloth to fit from the top of the stand to the floor, wrapping it around around each end leaving an inch or so of extra material for the hem(almost like wrapping a package). Lay out the cloth and use the fabric glue to glue to make a "hemmed finish" Use the velcro strips to attach the cloth to the stand cover. If it gets cruddy, you can pitch it into the washing machine and if ya get creative with the fabric you can make it match whatever room decor you have. /MarthaStewart

On the other hand - I wish my canopy was (stainless) metal instead of wood. It matches the stand nicely on the outside, but the inside is a mess from exposure to the salt breezes.
