I just set up a new tank with a sump underneath. I have 2 Rio 2800SS pumps in the sump sending the water back to the tank. They are really loud. Are they suppose to be that way? One of them makes a clicking noise as though there wasn't enough water or there are air bubbles in the impeller. But both of them makes a humming noise and vibrates the ground around the sump. I have 2 Rio 1700 circulating water to my algae scrubber, and I hardly know they are running when they are the only pumps running.

I wondering if the pumps are defective, or are they just like that. Are there other pumps that less obtrusive?

thanks,

Jerome :?:

Mousepads placed below the pumps will lessen the vibration transmission to the ground from the pumps (like a dampening pad). Watch those rio's close though, many bad instances have been reported about them. Any pumps that are making "clicking" or other unusual noises (rio or not) must be watched very closely, that's not a good sign. Vibration, although annoying, can be normal.

Turning them off? :?

Seriously, having two Rio pumps for return is going to be loud. First of all, they are not made to very good engineering standard, hence the noise. You may want to replace them with something of higher quality. That should cut down the noise level as a side benefit.

You could suspend them, perhaps with an egg crate tray. All you really need is to clear the bottom of the sump, an inch would suffice. Or on the egg crate idea what about 4 suction cups underneath a tray. Suction cups are kind of a natural shock absorber and you always end w/ more than you need anyway.

Am I allowed to ask what a better engineered pump? What would be a better choice than the Rio.

This is not a Nazi board. ;)

For submerg pump, you can use MagDrive, Dophin, etc., if you want something even better, get an external pump like Iwasaki, Little Giant, among others. Take a look at some of the sponsors of this board, and check out the powerhead and external pump section.

BTW, take a look at the "Pump Selection Guide" here on the board.

I have a mag, and it's still kind of loud (but it's NICE I have yet to have a problem with it). I bought a crap ton of cheap mousepads at staples and shoved them under the sump. It really helps reduce the noise. I suggest going that route.
