I am in need of a protein skimmer for my 54 gal. corner bowfront tank with built in overflow. I have limited space in my sump (old wet/dry acrylic box w/out bioballs). I already have a mag 5 in there returning the water back to my tank. My problem is that I would need a skimmer and pump that can be placed outside the sump. Efficiency, reliability and ease of use are important. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. My LFS tried to sell me a Marineland skimmer for $150 but I've read these are a waste of money! There are so many brands out there and my LFS does not carry many and I really don't trust his advice much anymore.

The turboflotor hang-on unit is what I use, comes with everything you need and requires a minimum of adjustment. The pump has to be in the sump though. If your sump doesn't even have room for that, sounds like you need a unit that can be plumbed in-line. Or a bigger sump.

I think one of the best choices for your water volume should be the DELTEC-MCE600! Quite compact device, with great efficiency and silent operation! These are the clues that have convinced me in ordering this skimmer...I am waiting for its shipping!Search a lot and good luck! :!:

Whatever you buy, be sure and check the footprint dimensions, and double check your sump dimensions including height clearance!

I realized my new skimmer would be within 1 inch of fitting after I bought it 8O

I just purchased a LifeReef skimmer. It's a bit expensive but does run outside the sump. It has a great reputaion and could be used down the line when and if you upgrade (of course we all know that's just a matter of time :D ). Check it out at www.lifereef.com
