It's been 1 1/2 days, and the cloud is showing no signs of settling. should I do some kind of filtering? Or should I cut water flow and let stuff settle?

If you have reef inhabitants, particullarly corals and inverts, I wouldn't cut the current. I assume you've added some live sand after your tank has been set up.

If you have a HOT or canister mechanical filter of some kind you may want to run it for a day to get the junk out of the water column. If you do this make sure to blow it off your rocks periodically while the filter is running to avoid a nice algae bed on your LR. Also, if you have filters that you can put on the intakes of your powerheads that will help a clear it up a little quicker too.

It will eventually clear up :)

Good luck!

if you added that crap after you livestock was already in... prepare for some dead animals my man. The dieback will spike your ammonia levels and fry every living thing in that tank. The livesand should have been added in the cycle period. Get them out before they die.

Secondly, if you added it during the cycle period like a goodboy, just give it time, it will settle. Mine took about a week to clear up. A canister filter with some activated carbon, like snow said, wouldnt hurt anything either.

I added it before adding any inverts or fish. The only things in the tank besides the sand are a couple chunks of live rock. I have been fanning the rock from time to time to get the settlement off.

As long as it will clear up eventually, I think I'll skip getting a HOT. Those things are expensive... unless I find an ebay special 8)

Yes, it will eventually settle, usually about a week. Bacteria will coat the surface of the fine particles and keep it down. It's the fine dust that we find them beneficial for a reef tank.

A powerhead with a sponge filter works good. Maxi Jets and Aqua Clear's are good, just make sure you clean them daily.
