taking up the suggestion of getting some beginner books for reef keeping , i bought "The Coral Reef Aquarium" by Ron Shimek

on Page 73 , under the chapter heading "Making Your Own" [seawater]
He writes " ...... The chemicals can be removed using dechlorinator solutions available at pet stores. Alternatively, the wated used to mix the artifical reed water can be stored in a container open to the ait and aerated or filtered for about 24 hours. This allows for the dissipation of these chemicals"

Does that mean by throwing a basic air stone and a simple filter into a bucket open to the air , i can purifiy my tap water?

I'm asking because i don't live close (~45 min) to a decent SW LFS store , and if i can take this route instead of buying an RO/DI unit , my wallet and water bill will be much happier.....

granted to be safe i could lug 6 5gallon buckets back and forth to fill my planned 30g tank , but purifiying my own tap water is alot easier.

thoughts?

Thanks

Here is how it works

If you live somewhere that provides city water, ie, not water from a well on your property, it usually has chlorine in it. That is to get rid of bacteria in the water and make it safe to drink.

Putting water in your tank with chlorine in it would be a bad thing, but you can get rid of the chlorine by doing exactly what Shimek says.

Does that Purify the water? No

If you want pure water you will have to go with a RO/Di system. The first step would be picking up a TDS meter and seeing exactly what your water is like. Also testing mixed saltwater that is ready to put in the tank for Nitrates and Phosphates is a good idea.

That way you know exactly what you are dealing with as far as Source water.

Hope that helps...

Check out www.buckeyefieldsupply.com I purchased a 75g/day RODI filter that works great from them for well under $200.00. Several ppl on this board have purchased from Buckeye and all have had good experiances.

As far as your water bill goes, I really dont think it will make much of a differance. My county charges by UNITS of like 1kgallons or somthing. The rate doesnt go up as long as I dont cross over into another unit.

Just somthing to consider.
