RED algae

I'm getting batches of thick red algae on my LR. I've put in a phosphate remover, but it the algae's still there.
a) Is it helpful but unsightly?
b) Is it nasty and unsightly?
c) Am I doing anything ill-advised in scraping it off?

Also, in regards to scraping it off with my fingers, will Palythoas in the water do anything? My clown, damsel and hermits seem to be getting on just fine...

What kind of red algae? The name is too vague.....

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that to be the good kind of alge. I bought some of my LR with that alge already on it.
