--------------
the tank has been up and running since the end of april of this year. it is new, but all LR and LS from established tanks.
it never really cycled as i have never had a trace of any ammonia or nitrite. all parameters are good. i put a royal gramma and a neon goby in it 3 weeks ago and were doing good. eating normal etc...i have a 4" crocea clam and a fire shrimp also.

the problem i believe started when i accidentally left the door open overnight that is next to the tank. it was pretty cold that night and the temp in the tank dropped to 65 deg. i woke up in the morning and monitored the temp of the tank and i let it slowly rise to 78 over the course of about 20 hours. this happened a week and a half ago. well, a week later and both my fish have ich! i am going to start a 10g for a hospital tank and nurse the fish back to health for 2 months. i have read many ich remedies online and feel that the hyposalinity method is for me because i hate adding chemicals to my water. my real question is what effect does ich have on the reef? will it effect the clam and inverts? i want to keep fish out of the show tank for 2 months to make sure the trophonts are gone and it wont spread to the fish again when re-introduced to the show tank. any help is appreciated. will the ich stay in the show tank even though there arent fish? there is a lot of life in the tank and i hate to have to sterilize it and start all over with new sand and live rock etc...
the fish i got were supposedly quaranteened at the lfs for a couple weeks and were in their tanks for a couple weeks before i bought them and would think they would have showed signs of ich soon after introduced to my tank, if they had it. any help or ideas are appreciated. thanks.

The fish may have been carrying a low level infection of the parasite and not shown it until stressed (big temp swing).

It sounds like you've done your research. IMO you're on the right path as far as setting up a treatment tank and leaving the display tank fallow for a couple of months. Ich is a fish parasite, so I wouldn't worry about it harming anything else in your reef. Without hosts (fish) in the display tank, they should eventually die-off.

Good luck with the recovery process and :welcome:
