Pythons are the way to go in my opinion.

Thanks Chris for the welcome! Just got back into it after 10 years,man things have changed.Im looking for a electric type vac.Was thinking of hooking a python type to my diatom but thought it would just suck up substrate?

I think the deluxe version of the Marineland Magnum filters (canisters) come with a gravel vac attachment, but I suppose you could hook a regular syphon-type gravel vac to any canister filter and it would work. I don't think using one with your diatom filter would work out very well - probably clog it up pretty quick. Like Tack said, check out a Python unit too - they're pretty convenient. Of course there's nothing wrong with the old gravity syphon either (my method of choice)...
