I really hope someone can help me out here. I have a Volitan Lionfish in a 55 gallon predator tank with two eels and a trigger fish. They have been in this tank together for over 6 months and are all trained to eat silversides and krill. The past couple of days, he hasn't eaten anything, and it looks like his gills are getting red. He is pretty much staying at the bottom of the tank too, not in his usual upright position by the skimmer. Is he sick? How do I tell? What would have made him sick? The only thing that I can think of is that our freezer quit last week, and the silversides defrosted, and we re-froze them in the deep freezer. Would that have made him sick? Someone please help me out here.

Have no idea if thawed/refrozen food would make him sick but I do know they are prone to liver problems due to overfeeding. Have you changed any additives or put something new in the tank?

Ok a Volitan, 2 eels & a trigger in a 55g, Look close at the fins are any nipped? What kind of Eels & trigger do you have this lion with. Most eels & triggers prey upon lions.....

It may be getting harassed by the others housed with this lion, lions are pretty hearty, I would say if your params were out the eels & trigger should show signs first.

Sorry I wanted to add:

What are you feeding this lion?
Any live freshwater fish?
How often are you feeding it?

That right there, would be my guess. 6months on a stagnant, non rotated diet will do any lion in.

Would be nice to know your water params to really help you out though.

Are any other fish displaying this behavior?

info baby info.
