okay. i only have about 4 peices of liverock in my tank...but a couple of them have some interesting things coming from them. keep in mind i've had this tank completely cycled for about a month and a half now.

first thing i found was this black blob-like thing coming out of a hole in a peice of the LR. it looked snail-like, but i haven't seen it ever poke out before. i recently got some turbo snails, is it possible they're multiplying somehow?

also...there is a SMALL...and i mean SMALL...circle of hair-like things on the rock. small as in the width of a pencil or pen. and only 10 or so hairs. it's a VERY perfect circle.

these are the two main things. i've found a couple other things, but these are the two i want answered first. ha

thanks!

From your description the first critter sounds like a Scutus sp.:

A harmless herbivore.

The second could be anything from a Zooanthid, Anemone, or Feather Duster. We really need pictures.

thanks for the help. after looking at this hitch hiker FAQ it raises one more question....

...can coralline algae grow on sand? i thought it was just coralline algae, but now i'm wondering if it's cyanobacteria instead.

i'm sorry for the lack of photos. i'll try and grab my friends digital cam to take some pics.

Blokx, coralline grows on hard surfaces, like the rocks or glass not on the sand. If you've got red stuff on the sand that looks like mats or sheets of snot that's cyano.

well then...that's what it is.

as for the flower-like things i found. i've found a couple more, and they do suck in when i get near the tank and such, so i'm guessing they are feather dusters. this one peice of LR has given me so many hitchhikers...but nothing bad yet!

thanks for all the help guys!
