I was doing my bi-weekly water change on my 5 gallon nano last week and replaced the poly-filter in the hang-on-the-back, over the next 2 days all my great mushrooms that had all grown from one shroom shriveled and died. Everything else in the tank seems to be alright. (encroaching gorgonias, riccordia shroom, small leather.

This change was done from the same 5gallons of mixed saltwater I had done previous changes with. I can't figure out anything that was different this time around.

Any ideas?

Also I hear a loud snapping at night, I remember reading about a certain shrimp that could be responsible and if I remember right it can kill fish. As I was looking to add a small royal gamma I want to make sure things are safe.

Thanks!

Dont know about da 'shrooms, but the snapping sounds like a mantis shrimp. Check with a flashlight at night to see if you see any mantis, or set a mantis trap and see what comes. If you do have a mantis there are some people around who would like on as they keep mantis-only tanks. BTW the mantis will catch and eat fish and other inverts. If you have a sump you can dump him in there and feed him occasionally, many mantis are actually quite colorful but they are deadly. :)

The snapping could also be caused by a pistol shrimp, which is harmless. Check out your tank after dark like ff2 suggested.

Hard to say what happened to your shrooms, particularly when eveything else is alright. :?

Hmmm. What kind of bucket did you use? Could it have been contaminated with a household chemical? Did the water you used sit for a long time and could that have been contaminated? The suddenness of the die off seems very strange. If it were a "normal" water quality issue it would have happened more slowly, like over the course of days or longer. at least that's what I would think.

I'll have to take a look tonight, see if I can't find what's causing the snapping. Since it's such a small tank I'd think I'd see a mantis, but who knows it's amazing what you'll find when you move things around.

I think I have the largest bristle worm hiding somewhere in there. :)

THanks for the suggestions, the bucket I used is the same I use for top-offs, and isn't used for anything else.

Perhaps it was something in the filter?

A shame, but like you said since everything else is ok it's kind of a mystery.

I have had colonies of shrooms unexplainably die a few times, but usually it took a week or two. Was the water well mixed? maybe the shrooms got doused with some strong water when you were doing the water change? It's probably a good idea to double check all the water peramiters just to be sure there isn't something off.
