filter not working?

My HOT Magnum filter just sucked up a flake when I was feeding my fish. The next thing I know, it is shooting out of the outlet in a bunch of tiny pieces. I'm totally confused because didnt it totally fail on the mechanical filtration job? Shouldnt the food have gotten caught in the filter sleeve and never left the filter until i cleaned it? (or until it was broken down by the bacteria?)
