I have a slightly snooty cat who really likes his drinking water to be moving. The other day I walked into the room with the fishtank and noticed the cat on the hood. I laughed and thought it was funny until he decided to try to take a drink. I immediatly yelled at him to get down. Unfortunatly in cat language no means yes do it and do it quick before he can get over here to get me off the tank. He proceeded to drink the water. The look on his face was pricless and I thought ah ha problem solved he doesn't like it. Now unfortunatly he either has a real short memory or he is just that stuborn and a few days later the episode was repeated again.

Do I need to be worried about any bacteria from his mouth getting in the water and damaging the tank or any problems with the water hurting the cat?

I'd be concerned. Drinking ocean water is already not advisable. Captive water is much more concentrated with nasty stuff.

Also, if there's any palythoa in the tank.. I'd um.. find a way to get a grate over the top of that tank so the cat can't drink! A fellow reefer lost his dog who drank from a holding bucket that contained palythoa. Palythoa toxin is deadly to most living creatures.

My cats drink out of my freshwater tanks all the time. Its kinda pointless trying to stop them, because you know cats they do what they want :D I've never had any problems with the cats or the tanks beacuse of this.

But, i wouldnt let them drink from the saltwater. They've tried it and im suprised they even like it, or maybe they are just doing it for sh1ts and giggles. Either way i think there are more harmful things in saltwater than in freshwater.
