I'm not sure if anyone has had this before but my 65gal has started to "bloom" brown floating alge. It's so thick that all of the water is brown and swirling with this stuff. The tank has been set up for one year now. I have general lighting, canister filter with ceramic tubes and a hang over filter. Really just a basic, basic set up. Any help PLEASE!

reef? i am thinking not with "basic lighting"

i would ditch the filter and throw in some liverock if you haven't by now it really does wonders.

it could be that gunk is building up in the filter and leaching phosphates into the water column.

there are many possibilties as to how this could happen so i would need more info to help you rid the tank of it for good.

just tell us your maintenance schedule and be exact about it.
include how many fish, gallons, top off water quality, feeding schedule, and basic water parameters and we can start from there.

thanks podman, I realized after careful observation, that my problem is that since the wonderful chage of season, the placement of my aquarium is near the window where my oak tree has lost all of it's leaves. Beautiful and wonderful sunshine casts through straight to the tank. Thanks for trying though. Spring thankfully is just a week or two away!!! Love the leaves.

It's from the lack of maintance you mentioned in your other post. Clean the glass, blow off the rock, change the filter media, clean as much of the sand as possible, then do a 100% water change. And then keep up with scheduled maint.

I actually did everything you said to do about a week ago. Minus the 100%water change. I did approx. 50%. The only thing that hasn't changed is the amount of light from the sun. I might have to do the big water change again. thanks

That's good to know. You really need to keep on top of it though. You can't ignor it for that long of a time frame and expect it to be wonderful. Keeping up maintance will be the trick to ridding the tank of any unwanteds. Hopefully, you're getting that reefer madness back now that you've gotten you hands wet  Keep it up :D
