I got higher ones, but that is only because I am running out of room for sand when I take down one of my tanks. If I keep it like that, it only shows that I don't use my resource (sand) wisely.

There's a spot in my Lagoon where the sand is 12". I doubt there's much added benefit vs a 6" bed.

If a 6 incher gets Nitrate to 0.0 then how low will 7" get you?

The only purpose I can see if for Macro animals that require very deep sand like Garden Eels or Unleashed.

using my 7 inch DSB i achieved a nitrate level of -1 :D

good point. so 6inch's is the recommended level?

I think it depends a lot of bioload and your other nutrient export systems you have in place. 2.5" might be fine in some cases. I don't believe there's a standing rule.

Man, this is getting into one of the sizing issue.... my DSB was 18 inches for a few months until I move the extra sand out. Not that it means anything, since it is only temporary.

I can't speak to this from experience but I've read in a few places that the particle size of your sand also has an impact. Finer sand requires less depth to accomplish the same denitrification as a coarser sand.

19" DSB in a 20" tank! Just kidding. I got about 2.5", good enough for some sand dwelling animals like my Nassarius snails and the million or so bristle worms. From everything I've read it seems it comes down to preference. I like the look of the sand bed myself.

I saw a study somewhere that suggested the shallower the sand bed and the finer the sand, the faster the ammonia-nitrite-nitrate-nitrogen cycle. Why would that be?
