I have one I've used in the past and it worked fine, but I'd upgrade from the Rio pump that comes standard.

For a gravity drain, basically the water level in the fuge only has to be a bit heigher than the lip of the main tank for it to work - depends on what you're using for a drain (ie. pipe, spillway, etc.). The greater the height difference, however, the greater the capacity of the drain will be.

Depends on the size of the refugium. :wink: Hang-on units (like the ones linked at the top of the thread) are usually fed by a small powerhead. For people with sumps - many just partition part of their sump to be the fuge in which case they don't need a separate pump at all.
