Pop Eye???

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a pygmy angel fish that I thought had eye cloud but his eye has gotten worse and it now looks as if it is pop eye. At the time his tail disappeared so I thought he had fin & tail rot as well.

I treated him with Melafix for 3 days in display tank then moved him to my 10g quarantine tank. I continued treating him for 4 more days.

The tail is almost full grown again and looking great. He has continued to eat and is still eating. He comes out and swims around.

His eye went from being slightly cloudy to solid white and bulging out of his head. It looks worse instead of better. I did a 3g change as directed by Melafix bottle.

Should I keep treating with Melafix or try something new? Do you think he will recover or is he recovered and now blind?

Any suggestions?

Thank You,

Sherry[/img]

I dont know too much about this ,but the LFS from what i have seen take the fish out and put them into a hospital tank and treat the eye with medicine. What kind?, i do not know, sorry not much more i can tell you. If no one else respones, go to LFS and ask what kind of medicine to use.
Good luck, wrasser 8)

Melafix is good for popeye... Usually pop eye is a symptom of low water quality... do your best and get ontop of water changes in the main and in the QT... check your water parameters... you may want something a little more strong than melafix, your lfs should have an antibacterial you can get for it.

That is a very good sign that his tail has recovered. I agree w/ the others that you go to the lfs or consult an expert in a forum and find out what medication to treat him with.
Good luck

Quarantine and treat (im not sure with what with s/w)..I recommend quarantine because if you have inverts in the tank such as shrimp or crabs, most treatments will kill them as alot of treatments are copper based. And honestly it might not make it but you i think you have to keep the quarantine longer than 3-4days IMO...maybe a solid week or two...In 16yrs of keeping fish, ive been fairly lucky with diseases/viral/bacteria ailments...Ive had popeye on a danio once and it didnt survive..Ich only but a couple times and that was with my cichlids..0 problems with my reef tanks (knock on wood) and 0 with my F/W community tank...So im fairly limited on how and what to treat with...

Agreed. Careful what you use in a reef type tank because the inverts will normally perish. I learned this the hard way back in the FW days. From what I understand about it tail rot is a fairly rare occasion in SW tanks.. but oh well. Stupid question, but is there anything else in the tank that is picking on the fish and causing undue stress ... thus the diseases?
