Hi All,
Just did my first water change yesterday. My salinity is at about 1.022-1.023. Is this good?

What is a good salinity level to have?

1.020 -1.025,anywhere in this range will work ok but the critical issue is stability.even a change from 1.020-1.021 in 24 hrs can stress your fish alot, keep it steady and adjust slowly.i keep my tank at 1.025 which seems common with more modern thinking.1030 pm here in nz...

yea the guy i bought all my live rock said to keep in at about 1.024-1.025. so i had to add some more salt to the tank. when you guys add salt, you don't just dump it in right? it should be dissolved first????

To safely raise salinity just use full strength saltwater for topoff until you reach the goal.

IMO a specific gravity of 1.020 is way too low for a reef tank.

I agree with Guy, you should keep @ 1.025 plus or minus a one this is close to the ocean. unless you are doing something specific, Red sea or others.

when you say full strength saltwater, do you mean right from the ocean? isnt this bad since you don't know what could be in that water? i've been slowly adding disolved salt to the tank.

FME, i have used full strength salt water from the atlantic for almost two years now. i have changed out over 500gal. in my 150 in that time spand. i have not had any problems in the tank. i also do it in my 55 too.
BUT i do have protien skimmers and uv lights on my systems and i have fish that also help reduce problems.
What i think Guy means is just add salt water @ 1.025 for top off, when the water evaporates. this will slowly bring up the salinity

Yep. Saltwater from a good mix at 35ppt salinity or seawater.

nope 1025 is fine. Steady levels above 1024 and below 1027 are good, just try to keep them at a point without drastic shifts.

1.025 is a specific gravity reading. To derive the Salinity you'll also need to know the temp. In my opinion a S.G. of 1.025 is fine at all tropical temps and corresponds to a salinity of 34ppt-35ppt depending on temp.
