Total crash

I am dealing with an ick outbreak in my main tank (72 gal)

Currently treating with kick ick and hyposalinity.

Last nite I finished lowered the salinity to 1.013 at 80 degrees .. this was done over the corse of 5 nites the most recent change bringing it from 1.016 to its present level

The visible symptoms of ick were disappearing and color was returning to the sickest of the fish and all fish were breathing regularly and eating.

I also added some buffering solution as I had been for several weeks to try to raise my ph from 7.8

This morning I woke up to find my yellow tang, peppermint shrimp dead.

My 3 dominos gasping at the surface and extremely pale (I don’t think they are going to make it)

My only guesses are

1- Oxygen depletion – as I have my skimmer off to maximize the kick ick treatment and the powerhead I count on to break the surface was totally submerged due to me being a moron perhaps they died of co2 poising.. evidence of this is the 3 damsels gasping at the tim (I have turned my skimmer on to re-oxygenate)

This seems strange to me as I did a 9 gal water change last nite and at most they had 10 hours without my oxygenation system working right

2- ph issues.. my ph has been impossible to bring up and it may be that eh kh buffering I have been attempting is actually driving ph down (will be able to look at water chemistry when I get home)

3- i dont know

if anyone can help me identify what has gone wrong or point me in right direction I would appreciate it as my tank it a total mess right now.

I lost the ich battle twice in my QT tank. Was using attack ick (suppose to be reef safe ) and all it seemed to do was turn the water to a brownish tint. Sorry no real suggestions, how do you think you got the outbreak to begin with? Do you use a QT tank?

Wow a 72 gal BF, I was thinking of buying 1 of those any pics??? How do you like it minus the ich of course!

Good luck!

Sorry you are having a problem.
The fish deaths sound like O2 depletion.
Leave the skimmer and stop dosing the Kick Ich. NONE of the reef safe ich treatments have been shown to work, and anecdotal reports show they do more harm than good. I would also run some carbon to remove the Kick Ich. I really hate all of those snake oils because they generate so many situations like yours.
In the mean time, either keep feeding the fish well or catch them out and q tank them with copper.

How bad was/is the ich?

BTW, with that amount of sand you always need to worry about o2 depletion. If you choose to turn off your skimmer, please make sure you have an airstone in the tank or a powerhead breaking the surface tension.

did not take that into account.. and o2 depletion is high on my list.. just seemed odd that it would happen so rapidly.. diddnt occour to me that the sand would contribute

the bow front is nice.. but i wont be taking pics till i am happy with the ecosystem.. as it stansds now i would need to use photoshop to add fish as they are all in the QT tank

It is amazing how fast 02 can deplete. On my old tank everything got unplugged one day and within 7 hours I lost all the fish. I am now a redundancy freak and have different pumps on different circuits, as well as air pumps that start up if the power goes out. I also just pulled my sand bed, but for different reasons.

Maybe take some of the sand out, how many lbs of sand is it?

understood, I thought you might have had a pic before the recent disater.

Do you get alot of distortion from the bowfront?
