I added a Blue Throat Trigger. About 6-inches. Nice looking fish, but research says that they "will eat ornamental shrimp". Which types are these? It loves my 2 cleaner shrimp..gets cleaned all the time. Hasn't tried to eat them yet.

He'll probably allow the established cleaner shrimp to live because he wants to be cleaned.

Any other ornamentals added later would probably be eaten immediately.

hmm..uh oh. I didn't know cleaners were in danger...ie: ornamental. Thanks for the info. I guess that means that if something happens to one of the shrimp..I can not add any replacement? If so, I have an issue with my LFS...the had told me that the blue throat trigger was non-agressive and reef safe.

Also note that Louey said "probably" - even the established shrimp are in definite danger.

I've seen a trigger snack on a cleaner after getting cleaned in the wild, I don't see where it would be any different in a tank at all..

What kind of trigger though? A couple of LFS guys are telling me that the blue throat is a rarity among triggers...ie: it is ok in a reef and in a community tank. Other triggers, such as the niger trigger and queen trigger..different story. I'm hoping they were right about the blue throat being a friendly neighbor. So far, the one I got has been a model citizen. Loves being cleaned....doesn't mind the other fish.

I'd keep him well fed. ;) Your shrimp are at risk. Maybe not.

The book on fish behavior hasn't been completely written yet. Not all fish do what the books says they will or won't do.

Good luck with you trigger. Hopefully he will live in harmany with your cleaner shrimp for 25 years. :D
