ok. I've made a decision which is no small fete with all the wonderful and sometime contradicting advise.

I'm going to use this KolorScape White sand. 160 to 200 pounds of it in my new 75 gallon tank. For now it will be FOWLR moving slowly slowly
towards a reef setup.

Now in using this sand, doing all the normal water tests and changes, I should catch any problems that come up.

Is there anything extra I should watch out for because I'm choosing to use non-aquarium sand ?

I want to add copapodes and small critters, it they are so small how do I know if they are alive and well.

Heh, making decisions in this hobby can sometimes be a chore because there are many ways to be successful, thus the varied and often conflicting advice...

Since you're going to use a product not intended for aquariums, I think one precaution I would take is to make sure it's well rinsed.

As for the pods and small critters - you'll see them creeping and crawling once you get some established poplations. Generally you'll get a lot of these sorts of animals hitchhiking in on quality live rock.

thank you. You're right I'm taking a bit of a risk. However, I've done my research and I believe that it's a reasonable risk.

I got my five bags this afternoon, annd the tank was delivered this evening. So I"m making some progress. This weekend I'll be rinseing
sand and washing down the tank.

I'll post back as I progress through this new hobbie !

I bought 200 pounds of sand yesteday. 5 40# bags @ 3.99.

I did re-test it and it does bubble.

Here are the pics of the bag and upc for anyone interested in trying it out.

My tank arrived yesterday and is now in the living room and I'm very excited.

I'm getting a GFI circuit for the tank so won't do much till thats ready. Need to give the sand a rinse this weekend and get some live rock.

Any rock you recommend to get and / or stay away from ??

More to come !!

That's different than the "KolorScape" sand I saw at the local HD here. The product here was not as white. That white version looks much nicer.

As for live rock, personally I prefer the Pacific stuff like Fiji, Kaelini, Marshall, etc. If you don't have any good places to get it locally I recommend checking out http://www.premiumaquatics.com.
