Del Tec MC500 skimmer- Cleaning/maintenance tips

I've had a Del Tec MC500 Protein Skimmer for a couple of months. What should I do to maintain? And any tips for better operation.

I clean out the gunk every week.

I've been told to turn it off for a full day every other week or so. And to take out the pump and clean it every couple of months.

Anything to keep in mind when cleaning the pump?

keep the collection cup clean. I use a piece of filter floss to wipe my cup. I wash the thing in hot water...

the pumps: I drop the airline in a gallon of r/o DI water every month. i top my tank off with the water so as the water is pulled thru the skimmer it cleans the venturi...

i rarely pull my pumps out.. too much hassle. unless it gets jammed or something...

cool skimmer by the way. cant you get a self cleanig kit for it..?

A good soak in white vinegar (unflavored) is good for the pump.
