I just set up (1 wk ago) a DSB in a 56g with a 30g sump/refugium. New sand in both tanks, topped with LS and LR curing in main tank and sump drain (about 80lbs). NH3 is high as expected. Q: Should I be getting cyano so quickly? Started about 3 days after set up and is now growing pretty well. I don't wan't to introduce snails into NH3 water and have been advised to do no water changes during initial cycling. Should I just wait it out and perhaps just manually clean the glass daily? Should I go ahead and do a waterchange? Doesn't appear to be growing in the refugium yet.

PS
Am also getting areas of black forming about 2-3" below surface of sand. Is this normal so soon.

More info:
Supposedly "fully" cured LR arrived prior to sump being ready and other timing snafus with LFS. Had rock in rubbermaid tub for a few days, then in tank for a few days (with new water), then removed it to place DSB and then back into tank. All holding of LR was done with appropriate water and temp and circulation.

sounds about right to me. Things are going as expected. Did your live rock still stink when you put it in the tank? Do you have a protein skimmer for it? What are your tank parameters please?
