Hi,

While my 40gal FO w/LR tank is in its cycle process, I've been thinking of what fish to add when it is ready. I definatley want a coule Percula Clows but was wondering what fish would work well with them . I'll list a couple that I am interested in...could you experts suggest the most ideal tankmates for clowns? I am only planning on adding one of these, whichever one it may be. I don't want to overload.

1. Humu Humu Trigger (or another similar type of Trigger)
2. Naso Tang
3. Yellow Tang

I want a fish that really stands out but that is easy to care for and not terribly destructive AND especially not a ton of $$$$

Eventually I see myself adding some snails and hermits for cleanup and possibly various mushrooms and other lower light inverts. I would be willing to limit the inverts to accomodate a more interesting fish though. Thanks ----Rob

The tangs will get too big for your tank, they need alot of room to swim. As for the trigger, I'm not sure, but I don't think he will get along with the clowns. Hope this helps.

Glad to see you are thinking ahead Rob74 but I agree with Simon, the tangs are just not suited to a smaller tank and ANY trigger will also outgrow your environment. Quickly. Also, the triggers are waaaaay too agressive to keep with smaller fish like the clowns.

Of course, a pair of clowns themselves get a lil nasty and territorial, and you should take that into account for whatever fish you decide to put in with them. For example a quiet like like firefish would get harassed by the pair and would be IMO unsuitable as tankmates.

As far as suggestions, some of the hawkfish are quite stunning, and not apt to get harassed by the clowns.

A huma huma trigger will eat all of your other fish unless you keep him full.

Keeping him full is a problem because then you are putting so much food in the tank that getting the nutrients out gets to be a problem.

the suggestion of a hawkfish is a good one, I have one and love it in my 55. I have never been able to keep a tang alive for more than a few months in my tank, I think its because there really isin't enough swimming room in there by time you add rock and stuff.

You could maybe think about a smaller fairy/flasher wrasse, these are VERY beautiful and fairly peaceful. Pseudochromids/Basslets are also very cool and interesting to watch. IMO, firefish are wonderful tankmates for Percula clowns. HTH
