I've decided to go with a RO system from an online store. I am trying to figure out how big of a system to get.

I will be using this for a 50 gallon + 30 gallon sump.

It would be nice to have 5 to 10 gallons per day of fresh water for top-off, cleaning etc. and I would like to have 30 gallons of salt water on hand in case of an emergency.

I have two 30 gallon trashcans. Can I mix the saltwater in one and keep a power head in it to keep the water from going stagnate? How long can I keep water before it's no longer usefull as replacement water? Or would it be better to only make the 8 gallons for the usual water change and make more if an emergency actually comes up?

What do you guys usually do?

It's definitely a wise move to have some water on hand in the event that you have to do an emergency water change. If you have a good, tight fitting lid on the storage container the saltwater should be good pretty much indefinitely.

I also had (coming back from saltwater retirement :P )2 30g trash cans. One can I would use with my RO/DI unit to house newly filtered water and the other can I would use to keep a constant supply of saltwater on hand.

I usually have one water change worth of salt water on hand. Do the water change then mix the batch for next week.

I have 0 on hand

I can have it ready in a day though, just turn two valves and start dumping salt in my mixing tank.

my RO unit is 35 gpd and it makes more than enough for my 54 tank and 50 sump.
