tufa rock is volcanic in origin, and some of them may have metal in there, depends on source. Check with your local geologist if you got them locally, otherwise, contact with the supplier, or not use them at all.

you can use tufa rock with no prob. I have a tank full of it. Never any problem. Ends up being good cheap live rock.

ck, are you sure you are talking about tufa and not "lace"? My "tufa" is a real soft, brownish, porous type of rock that I did not know/realize that it is volcanic in nature? My lfs even said that it had calcium carbonate in it.

Actually, many "tufa" rock we see are ofthen "tuff" rock that is volcanic in origin. If what you have is actually true tufa, then you still need to make sure there is no other minerals beside calcium carbonate that can leach out into the saltwater. The formation of tufa rock is various, most of them involve precipation of carbonate by bilogical/physical/chemical process, and during this, other undesireable co-precipates may get trapped within. It really depends on your luck. Some are more willing to take risk than others. :)

To me, it's just not worth the $$$ savings to possibly introduce some unknown gaaack into my tank.

 but that's just me...
